We profess our love for New Orleans in every blog post we pen, but the old saying is true: Actions speak louder than words. That’s why GiveNOLA Day, happening Tuesday, May 3, is so important. The day gives us all an opportunity to take action and support our city via online donations to local nonprofits. Log on to GiveNOLA.org on Tuesday, May 3, and get ready to give back.
What is GiveNOLA Day?
The Greater New Orleans Foundation created GiveNOLA Day as the first one-day, online giving event in the city. Through a minimum gift of $10 to your choice of local nonprofit, you can directly aid worthy causes and strengthen our community. Every donation is tax deductible, and you can search from hundreds of participating nonprofits: simply search by name, parish, or area of focus and find the nonprofit that most speaks to you. Your donation goes directly to the nonprofit, and the Greater New Orleans Foundation does not receive any fees from GiveNOLA Day.
By the Numbers
Last year, GiveNOLA raised $4 million from more than 34,000 donors. They weren’t just from New Orleans, either – donations poured in from all over the country to support local nonprofits.
The total GiveNOLA Day funds also include a lagniappe portion from the Greater New Orleans Foundation. This means that every nonprofit will receive a proportional share of extra money.
A Chance to Dance
GiveNOLA Day happens during National Travel and Tourism Week, the annual celebration of tourism efforts nationwide. In New Orleans, the week features special programming, including a French Quarter second line that happens the same day as GiveNOLA Day. Keep your ears open for the second line, and be sure to log on to donate to your favorite local charity. You can also head to Lafayette Square in the CBD to keep an eye on the leaderboard as millions of dollars are raised! Lastly, while at the square, you can donate directly to your favorite charity at the Entergy New Orleans Donation Station.
